Clothe Yourselves

Clothe Yourselves –
I happened to turn on the TV yesterday, and the news happen to be on, but not the normal
news segment, it was a ‘good news’ segment. I told my wife, I wish the news was always
like this, stories of restaurants giving out food to people that had been laid off, restaurants
that were giving food to first responders and hospital staff free of charge. The segment
went on for what seemed like ½ hour. It put the spotlight of what we as humans are able to
do in times of trouble and unrest.
As followers of Jesus, this is what we are asked to do. In Colossians 3:12 it says, “Since
God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with
tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” I really liked the way
that this came across in the New Living Translation, “since God chose you”. He did choose
you, and for a time such as this. God is not shocked or surprised by what we are seeing
and going through, but He has given us directions on what to do, not just now, but every
day.
The simple word of humility, just means ‘a modest or low view of one’s own importance;
freedom from pride or arrogance’. I think that Jesus modeled this best when He washed His
disciples’ feet, the lowliest of jobs, He didn’t look down on others, He lowered Himself to
walk with others. Each day that we get up, it is not something that we have to do, it is
something that we get to do, all to bring Him Glory. So go and be a blessing today, be
clothed in mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
